METHOD OF RESEARCH

On finding Gareth’s diaries in my aunt Gwyneth’s house in 1990, I was determined to investigate his death.  I knew the story started in Japan and not in China as most people thought.  First Mrs Sheila Sellars transcribed those diaries relating to the Far East in 1935.  At least six years ago I transcribed his weekly letters to his family, which were written in the last six months of his ‘Round the World Fact Finding Tour’.  Following this I endeavoured to merge the two into a story.  The section on his capture by bandits was taken mainly from newspaper articles that had been kept by my grandmother, Mrs Major Edgar Jones, and from those which were given to her in a book that a fellow journalist had compiled in his memory.

I commenced his personal history ‘My Uncle Gareth’, compiled from oral family history and from perusing a ‘scrap book’ containing many of his articles dating from 1930.  There had been much correspondence between Lloyd George’s Secretary, Mr A.J. Sylvester and my grandfather, Major Edgar Jones, and this was collated with extracts from Public Record Office documents.

I was no nearer finding the solution to his death and subsequently I felt it necessary to study the period of history prior to the tragedy.  Books and documents that I read are recorded in the Bibliography.  The final interpretation of his death is my own opinion.  On commencement of the transcription of his diaries and letters I presumed that the story was to be a personal one, but have found that as it evolved it became one of political intrigue.
